Propeller Performing Group

Workshops and performances are available on request for schools, community organizations and professional arts presenters.  The Propeller Performing Group is currently a closed group.

PROPELLER DANCE uses the DanceAbility teaching methodology.  DanceAbility is an improvisation methodology created specifically for teaching integrated groups of people with and without disability.  Participants use their own natural movements within structured dance improvisation exercises that emphasize independent choice making.  The method breaks down barriers and stereotypes by focusing on ability.  If you breathe, you can dance.  The DanceAbility method was created by Alito Alessi (Oregon, USA).

History

In 2001, The School of Dance in Ottawa, hired Shara Weaver and Alan Shain to develop the DanceAbility program as an outreach wing of the school.  Renata had been teaching special needs community arts programs in Ottawa since 2002 and that same year joined Shara at The School of Dance as an instructor and co-director of the DanceAbility performing group.  The DanceAbility program was featured CTV, TVO, and CBC Radio, along with many written articles in newspapers and magazines.  In 2004, the group received the "Best Group Dance Show" of the year from the Ottawa Xpress.  We thank The School of Dance for their innovation in supporting mixed ability dance in Ottawa and wish them all the best in their future DanceAbility programming.

Who's Who at Propeller Dance

Shara Weaver and Renata Soutter teach and direct the program.  Alan Shain also directs and dances with the group.  A dancer from a young age, Shara received her DanceAbility Teacher Training Certificate in Eugene, Oregon from Alito Alessi in 2005.  She has extensive experience teaching and performing West African and improvisatinal dance.  Renata Soutter holds a B.F.A. in contemporary dance and community development and has extensive experience as a choreographer, dancer, teacher and arts administrator.  All classes also feature a live professional musician.
